Outstanding Leadership in Queens
2012 Honoree of the Queens Federation of Churches

Brendan Leavy

Brendan Leavy has been a licensed insurance professional for over 25 years. After graduating from Queens College with a Bachelors of Arts, Brendan immediately started working in the insurance industry. He ran his own insurance agency for over 17 years, and took pride in providing a high level of professional client service, always going above and beyond for his customers. During his career, he achieved recognition as a commercial insurance sales leader with well known insurance companies both regionally and nationally.

Brendan is now with Intercity Agency Inc., Bayside, a brokerage with extensive experience working with nonprofit organizations and religious institutions. Over the last 5 years, he has helped build strong professional relationships with a diverse group of religious communities throughout the New York Metropolitan area. While he is proud of the relationships he has built with many prominent churches, schools and temples, he is most proud of his work with these institutions to improve child safety in the church setting. Brendan works with clergy and trustees to create a “best practices” approach to child safety and advocacy. He believes that, as stewards of children, religious institutions must strive to do everything possible to provide a safe environment for the children entrusted to their care, whether in a Sunday school, nursery school, day care, sports program, or other setting. He strives to make child safety a top priority for all of his clients.

Brendan also works with church leaders to improve risk management at the church or temple. Whether addressing 15 passenger van safety concerns, or discussing proper board governance, he strives to educate and inform leadership enabling them to make more informed decisions. Brendan has run educational seminars for church leaders and youth ministers designed to help church leaders address safety concerns in the church and school setting. He regularly consults with the Queens Federation of Churches on insurance and risk management and is always available to consult with QFC members. Brendan has been a strong supporter of QFC and its mission since he first began working with the organization in 2008. He believes in interfaith dialogue as a means for building bridges between communities. He believes this is critical when you consider that we live in the most diverse place on the planet. The need for communities to come together has never been greater.

Brendan is a long time Queens resident, and he is an active member at American Martyrs Roman Catholic Church in Bayside and a member of the Father John J. Murray Knights of Columbus Council based at his church. The council has organized multiple Food Pantry Replenishment initiatives to benefit churches and nonprofits throughout Queens. The council actively solicits donations of clothing to benefit local nonprofits in need. They also organize numerous fundraisers throughout the year which benefit the church as well as other charities throughout the city. The council recently organized a community clean up of the “Brooklyn-Queens Greenway,” a section of the NYC Parks enjoyed by many Southeast Queens residents.
Brendan is happily married to Milena, his wife of 18 years, and is the proud father of 3 girls, Emma, 12, Megan and Julianne, identical 8-year-old twins.
