Commission of Religious Leaders of New York City

Charter

We, as members of religious communities, have come together in all our diversity and differences, recognizing the sacred dimension of each other, to create the Commission of Religious Leaders of New York City.

In attempting to do what we understand to be God's will, our mission will be:

(1) to examine the problems with which our City is faced such as poverty, racial strife, homelessness, and a breakdown of moral values, family structure and other social institutions;

(2) to play a strong and pivotal role in the life of our City by joining together and speaking for the voiceless, seeking racial and economic justice, and serving as an advocacy body to affect society, including government, for the good of all;

(3) to call public and private interests and the media to focus on and, jointly with us, seek to solve these problems; and

(4) to remind all that we must not only live our lives better but help to make the lives of others better.

— Adopted September 29, 1999

The Commission of Religious Leaders is currently comprised of leadership representatives from the various denominations of Judiasm, Christianity, and Islam. Staffing for the Commission of Religious Leaders is provided by the Council of Churches of the City of New York.
