Correctional Association of New York

The Correctional Association of New York (CANY) is an independent, non-profit prison reform organization. CANY was founded by concerned citizens in 1844 and granted unique authority by the New York State Legislature to inspect prisons and to report its findings and recommendations to the legislature and to the public. Through monitoring, research, public education and policy recommendations, the Correctional Association strives to make the administration of justice in New York State more fair, efficient and humane.

The Queens Federation of Churches is working with the Correctional Association on two its important projects. Follow the links to learn about each campaign and how your congregation can get involved.

Release of Aging People in Prison (RAPP) Campaign – seeking to establish a parole process in New York that is transparent, all inclusive, and fair, in which the state bases its parole decisions on legitimate public safety risk and individuals’ demonstrated personal growth while in prison.

New York Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement – seeking sweeping reform of New York’s use of solitary confinement and other forms of extreme isolation in state prisons and local jails.
